DA4 project work - Cairo's Zabaleen

For our development in practice module simulation project, we've chosen to look at the case of the Zabaleen, a group of waste pickers in Cairo Egypt who are gradually being pushed out by the Egyptian government's aspiration to 'develop' by bringing in MNCs to do the job for them.

Surprisingly however, Zabaleen recycle some 80% of the rubbish they collect, where as multinationals recycle only 20%. Moving on from this kind of information, we'd like to devise something of an integrated business model which serves the interests of the municipality, the Zabaleen and the MNCs in the same way as success has been notable in cities such as Belo Horizonte in Brazil.

This is what I'm currently reading http://www.gtz.de/de/dokumente/gtz2010-waste-experts-conditions-is-integration.pdf

Check it out. The German technical cooperation are streets ahead as usual! (from my knowledge so far GIZ - formerly GTZ, seem to be one of the most innovative, but comprehensive donor organizations in their project engagement).
