About the blog

This blog cover a variety of issues in international development - mainly related to politics of development, urban infrastructure, and watsan.
I first called it "Item One" because I wanted the focus to remain on issues which I believe should be at the top of the agenda, politically speaking. Whilst I still like the idea, the name was a bit too grandiose sounding, and what it's turned in to is more of a collection of offcuts of information gathered during the course of my studies and work experiences to date. 'Splintering' is a term I've come across to describe the nature of modern urban growth. I like to use it here because it holds the imagery of issues that stick like thorns in your side or pricks in your fingers and won't leave you alone until you address them.
