Ethiopian WASH initiative, Ripple & IDE

Ethiopian Govt initiatives - i.e. domestically led
In 2010 the Govt of Ethiopia began rolling out the National WASH inventory (NWI) - collecting data about every water scheme in the country and teh water, sanitation and hygiene access and practices of every household...criticall y joint planning will extend to health and education sectors to enable much greater progress in sanitation.

Role of RIPPLE
RiPPLE has helped identify data gaps and information bottlenecks in the planning process for new water investments

- developed GLoWS - Guided learning on Water and Sanitation - which is a training course for woreda staff based on 'learning by doing'
- will publish in 2012

The expected benefits and outcomes of the National Wash Inventory (NWI)
'It represents a significant step with the potential ot create greater equity in services, a beetter understanding of service sustainability adn more coordinated results oriented approach among both government agencies and donors.

where does IDE come in?

Other interesting info
- Over 95% of food production in Ethiopia is rain fed, therefore making it extremely vulnerable to climate change
- The GoE has produced a national Adaptation Programme of Action (NAPA) and is currently identifying further actions needed to support vulnerable communities to build resilience to climate change, many of which are in the water sector.
