The U.N. Economic and Social Council has granted consultative status to three non-governmental organizations whose applications were initially rejected by the council’s Committee on NGOs.

Following the council’s decision, the International Foundation for Electoral Systems, Syrian Center for Media and Freedom of Expression, and International Lesbian and Gay Association now join more than 2,500 NGOs consulted by ECOSOC as it carries out its mandate of coordinating the economic, social and related work of U.N. specialized agencies and commissions.

Aside from the three NGOs, members of the ECOSOC panel also accredited 260 other organizations during a meeting at the U.N. headquarters in New York on Monday (July 25).

The U.N. has been boosting NGO participation in its various bodies and several key conferences such as the Millennium Development Goals summit review in September 2010, when the U.N. opened its summit process to civil society and the private sector for the first time.
